Mind Detox

Detox is a word which has become almost as common as the word “Iphone” in our every day lingo.

Even though we might not know all the exact down-to-the-nano-particle-of-certain-molecules-or-cells-details-and-functions of neither the word “Detox” nor the word “Iphone” , we are all aware that both words are necessary for our survival ( ? ).
Or at least we know that one is – the other we most likely feel like it would be pretty difficult to survive without.

Well aware of the fact that Detoxification is the process in our bodies which rids our system of toxins we have become more and more picky about what we put in our mouths, on our skin, the quality of the air which we breathe in and more.

But what about the things we let in to our minds through the gateways of our senses?

And what about the stuff that comes out of our mouths as we speak?

Is the music you are playing, the books, magazines and blogs you are reading, the movies you are watching, the people you are spending your time on or off line with aiding your mind with detoxing so that mind can restore it´s balance? Or are they part of making mind more toxic?

During a workshop a few weeks ago one of my teachers asked us; “how does it feel when you gossip, or when you hear gossip? Pretty dirty, eh? Like you have to go wash your hands or brush your teeth! Compare that to when you sing a mantra or give someone honest praise”.

Same story with what enters your mind. Does it make your mind space more beautiful and serene or more clogged with uck?

What comes out of our minds – reflected in our thoughts, actions and speech has once entered in to our minds.

Yogic practice – Sadhana – is about detoxifying the mind. When the mind is detoxed it is clear and has no problem with making the “right” decisions including what is best for the body at any given moment.

At the same time, it is vital to surround ourselves with the people, inspiration, actions and speech which is conducive to this detoxification – not something which is “re-toxing” and filling up at the same speed, or even faster, than what is being detoxed.

Spring is a great time to take stock of what is lifting us up in life, letting that thrive, adding some more water to it´s growth and allowing what is no longer serving us to be washed away by the melt-waters´ flooding waterfalls, river banks and lakes stronger and faster by the day.

Make way for the green, not just on your plate but also in your mind this spring so that you can move in to summer with a clear view.

Kale and spinach soup

Oh so yummy easy as soup

Short post again ;-). It will take you just about 1 minute longer to cook this soup than the time it takes you to read this recipe post –  that´s how short they both are ;-).

Ingredients;

150 gr kale

100 gr spinach

500 ml vegetable stock

half a lemon

2 cm approx fresh ginger root

1 onion

coconut oil

pepper

Sautée the onion and the garlic in the coconut oil in a pot on medium heat. Add the kale and spinach and allow them to sautée along for a little while.

Stir in the stock, the ginger and the lemon juice. Use a mixer to get the soup in  smoother state, spice with the pepper and serve!

Enjoy!

Quick, easy, yummy healthy breakfast / snack

Sometimes we just need to get some “grubb” like we call it in Sweden in really fast.

This is one of my favourite Yummy, Fun and Healthy breakfasts and snacks. There are even times when I am guilty of having a double portion of this for lunch as well, when time feels really scarce.

What you do is basically to mix this together;

200 or 250 grams of cottage cheese

handful of nuts

pinch of cinnamon

huge serving of your favourite berries or fruit, or whatever berries or fruit you have in your house 😉

Enjoy!

Hands ´n feet ´n winter

Winter. Water. Cold. Yin. Kidneys. Hibernation. Recuperation. Rest. Movement. Stamina.

Plenty of words to describe the season and element we are in.

I just read in a centuries old “Farmers Wisdom Calendar” that if the old year freezes together with the new year it will be strong winter.

A strong winter. What does that mean actually?

A lot of us might shrug and think “uh, that means a long, cold, winter with frozen hands, feet and nose”. Other’s might think “yeah, that means a long, crisp, ice and snow clad couple of months ahead with loads of fresh air enjoy ice skating, skiing and sledding with the kids down the slopes”.

I would like to think of it as simply “strong winter”. Winter – with all it’s cold, ice, rain or snow, biting winds, somewhat darker days and longer evenings, with me feeling strong. Strong winter.

The planet needs this season to be cold, to be “real” to be in balance here in the Northern Hemisphere. We are not separate from the planet.

So, how do you wake up to “strong” on a winter morning? How do you create “strong, vibrant and warm from the inside” when your fingers and toes are getting colder, reflecting the Yin aspect for this period? How do you energize yourself without running for the closest Starbucks triple espresso?

Handstand!

What? Handstand? That Instagram-flooded pose which seem to be the staple of every Instayogi or wannabe out there? But, that’s crazy right?

Well, actually not.

If you are already practicing handstands, go right ahead and make it part of your morning routine; Brush your teeth, brush your hair, go stand on your hands, then style your hair and you are good to go on many levels – complexion, metabolism, energy levels, spark, inspiration, hormone balance and more.

And whenever you feel a bit of a down in the energy levels, a bit of a chill coming from inside, finger tips feeling frozen, toes starting to go numb – find a wall (if you need one 😉 ) and do your next handstand.

If you are new to handstands, there is a great practice to do – usually called “1/2” handstand;

Get into Adho Mukha Svanasana/ Downward Facing Dog with your heels touching the plinth on the wall.

If you start feeling strain on your wrists here it means your fingers are not strong enough yet. What you do then is keep practicing just this part and of course also Adho Mukha Svanasana as often as possible, stopping as soon as you feel your wrists. You will still get nearly all the benefits of a full handstand here already.

Keep rooting your fingers down and forwards as if you want to push the floor down and away from you.

Put one big toe as high up on the wall as possible – “as high up as possible” being very important here to make sure you don´t make it too heavy for yourself as we want to wake the energy up and preserve it, not exhaust it.

Exhale to your center/samana vayu/dantian/hara point/mula bandha/powerhouse/core – whatever name resonates with your practice and keep it strong as you keep in & exhaling through the nose, rooting & activating on the exhalation, elongating on the inhalation.

Allow your other foot to come up and place it next to the first one. Keeping all toes active, keep breathing as mentioned. On the exhalation you are attempting to push the wall all the way in to the neighbours house  – or the next room – while keeping the hands and fingers active, rooting the opposite direction (away from the feet).

When your body says “done” come down in to Balasana/Childs Pose. Rest. Do one more, starting with the opposite foot. Childs Pose again.

Gently roll up to a sit.

Namasté.

Waffles!

Waffles to me is one of the most Swedish dishes ever.

Waffles instantly make me think of my grandmother´s kitchen, cold winter days in the snow  with friends and once we were cold to the bone after hours of pulka rides and snowball fights, arriving at grandma´s for freshly made waffles with jam and whipped cream.

Waffles takes me back to days on the ski slopes in Sälen , stopping by the “Våffelstuga” – literally translated “the waffle hut” – to fill up with energy through , you guessed it , waffles , whipped cream and jam.

Since then I found out –  8 years ago –  that I am allergic to gluten, plus I have cut out sugar entirely of my diet and dairy products rarely enter our household.

Every time my friend Stina posts her healthy waffles she makes in the mornings on Instagram and Facebook I get instant home-sickness mixed with this urgent need to have waffles – which a has been going on for at least 3 years :-).

So when one of my Instagram friends , whom happen to live in the same city as I am and is Swedish, brought me back a Swedish waffle iron last fall from one of her travels “home” I was over the moon. I made quite a few attempts at gluten free waffles, but they all tasted like paper and cardboard to be honest.

Then, about a month ago,  I remembered having heard my mother say one day some decades ago that waffle batter is essentially the same as pancake batter.

And we all seem to eat these “two ingredient pancakes” the past year or two , right?

So, I pimped that recipe a bit – tried a few different combinations and finally, waffles!

Waffles, yummy enought to eat. Waffles, yummy enough to eat and being gluten free, sugar free as well packed with ingredients great for your health! Bam!

I think I have been posting “waffles for breakfast”, “waffles for brunch”, “waffles for lunch”, “waffles as snack” a few times per week on Instagram ever since 🙂 , and a lot of people have asked me to share the recipe.

Here it is – per person your ingredients are;

1 banana

1 dl porridge oats

3 eggs

cinnamon powder

turmeric powder

baking soda

half a handful of dried mulberries

half a handful of dried goji or blueberries

Just like with the banana pancake you mush the banana with a fork. The you add and mush in the baking soda, cinnamon and turmeric powder.

Add eggs, mulberries, goji or blueberries and the oats. Mix it all.

Heat up your waffle iron. Add some coconut oil to your waffle iron if needed. Batter in the iron , wait a few minutes and you are ready to rock.

Serve with berries or fruit preferred.  Sprinkle with coconut flakes if you´d like.

Enjoy!

And on top of that;

  • How the h….k do I make mindful transitions from one asana/pose to the next ?
  • How do I find strength in Chaturanga / Plank?

  • Adho Mukha / Downward Dog what? How is it actually supposed to feel? What is it good for?
  • Where is the correlation between flow in yoga asanas/ postures and in the life I live? Is it all just a myth or can I find my own truth and path in there?
  • Yes, pranayama / flowing breath = physical strength, mental focus and peace of mind in one. I have heard that. But how?

Zonnegroet, Flow, Serie

Zonnegroet. Er lijken er zo veel te zijn….

En bovendien;

Kom mee doen!

Vrijdag 3 maart, 18.30-21.30uur in Movement Studio Haarlem
