Frozen water

Winter.

That is what frozen water often represents to us.

We see the crystal-covered, uneven surface of the ice taking shape as the temperatures drop and the mix of cold air and sparkling sunshine are working its magic.

While the surface might be frozen, underneath it the water still flows, the fish are still swimming, the rocks on the bottom are still being shaped by the underwater currents.

There is a stillness.

A stillness which, when we sit down to listen to it, tells us to slow down, to embrace the darkness which comes in a little earlier every day, to light our candles and allow our attention to turn inwards.

There is a yearning for warming, nurturing and nourishing foods. Foods which represents the holidays and festivities  already present in our calendars this very season; pumpkin, squash, (sweet) potatoes, leafy greens such as kale and green cabbage, mushrooms, apples, pears…

While I lived in The Netherlands I fell in love with one of the staple national foods available there at this time of the year – “stamppot boerenkool”, a delish kale and potato mash – even though I never mastered cooking it well.

Another one of my favorite ingredients that I eat almost daily from November till March is sweet potatoes.

I first got to know these in New Zealand in the late 80ies under the name Kumera, and I was totally sold from the first bite on. Whenever I have been able lay my hands on sweet potatos ever since I just have to have them.

Aside from its soft, sweet, soothing and warm taste the sweet potato is the staple food of the traditional Okinawa population in Japan – the population whom has been studied the most intense when it comes to longevity, diet and lifestyle.

This gentle orange, reddish or somewhat purple spud is packed with soluble fibers (great for our gut and gut flora), Vitamin A in the form of Retinol – which among other benefits keep your skin clear and glowing – , potassium (vital for the functioning of among other organs your kidneys, your heart) and calcium (we all know about calcium and bone health right ? Plus there are numerous studies linking calcium intake to reaching and maintaining a healthy weight).

On that note, I would love to share one of my all time favorite recipes ; Sweet Potato Cakes . A complete Water Element / Kindey Yin balancing snack, which I love to savor either over a cuppa with friends or down at the lake wearing mittens with a thermos in hand;

Ingredients;

200 g cooked sweet potatoes

100 g buckwheat flour, or a mix of almond and buckwheat flour

100 g ghee

1 apple, chopped in yummy size pieces

1 tspn chopped or grated fresh ginger

a pinch of cinnamon

  • if you like to make the taste even more “season” you can add a pinch of nutmeg and cardamon powder as well.

Just stir the ingredients together in a bowl. You can use either a cupcake or muffin mold – or roll small balls, which you then flatten out to patties.

Let them bake for around 30 minutes on 200 C.

Enjoy!

Stress Relief, Restorative Yoga

Release, rest, reset

The trees are almost completely bare this time of the year in the south of Swedish Lapland where I am living at the moment.

More or less totally naked.

I can´t decide if they look dead or just totally cleansed, getting ready for hibernation or cocooning.

Either way, something changed and there is no way denying it.

“Change is the only constant in life” – wise words spoken by dear Heraclitus more than 2500 years ago.

Words so evident once we open our eyes to take in the changes in nature – even if we live in the city there are trees and flowerbeds somewhere to be seen and birds to be heard – breathing in the air which changes it’s temperature and humidity as the seasons travel onwards, looking up at the sun to see where it sits today during our lunch break (if you ain´t taking a lunch break, how about giving that as a gift to yourself starting right now 😉 ?), just sharing space with what is moving around, above and below us.

And yet we are masters at acting as if every day is the same as the day before, simultaneously yearning for the change we don´t see is there already, fearing growing older while we are longing for weekends, vacations or parties ahead.

The change we might want we cannot force, the change we don´t want we cannot push away. But the change which is there constantly – that only constant in life – that very one, is there to be noticed, to carry us towards our focus of mind, our goal or our wish, to allow us to flow with what is towards what is to come.

This time of year that change is more noticeable than ever.

Maybe because nakedness is somewhat scary, almost raw, open, vulnerable and in a way feels cold against the skin underneath the layers we are shedding?

But hey, unless you release what is there  there won´t be any space for what is to come!

And yes, with the risk of sounding like a broken record – “change is the only constant”, so let’s allow ourselves to cocoon a bit, to rest in the nakedness after our shedding, to find that place where we feel warm and supported from the inside, that cozy space which is only yours.

You know, that space where you can re set your clock, find your rhythm and your way of being in this world. Your foundation.

Quite often we find ourselves struck by colds, infections, flu’s and other less pleasant mucus–creating states around this change from fall in to winter, when the element of Metal (the element of the lungs and the large intestine) hands us over to the element of Water (the element of the kidneys and the urinary bladder).

This is again nature’s and our bodies (which are actually one and the same) way of helping us to rid ourselves of what is to be released as well as showing us the importance of taking rest before resetting. So, why work against nature with pushiness just wanting to get through it all?

My favorite Yoga asana for this period is a supported Viparita Karani – also called simply “legs up the wall pose” – for which there are Sanskrit translations called both “upside down seat pose” as well as “reversing attitude”.

All you need is a wall, a floor and a blanket or two (instead of a blanket you can also use towels, a cushion, or a few books for instance).

You start with piling up your blanket/s about 10 cm’s from the wall.

If you have a yoga mat, place your mat first with one of it’s short sides against the wall and then the blankets on top of it.

Now comes the only challenging part of the whole posture (;-)), which is maneuvering your legs up the wall and the lowest part of your buttocks – or to be more exact – your sitting bones against the wall.

One way of doing this, which also happens to be the easiest way, is sitting on the pile of blankets you built with the side of your body facing the wall and then turning 45 degrees to get your legs up the wall and your torso down onto the floor. You might end up sliding away from the wall with your sitting bones at first, or you might not even get to the wall with your sitting bones at all, but not to worry. You can simply use your elbows to walk your body closer to the wall until you are in position.

If you have short hamstrings – the muscles on back of the thighs connecting to the lower back – you might find yourself with your sitting bones not touching the wall but being about 10 – 20 cm’s away. No problem, that is fine for now too.

The only thing that is important is to have your pelvis resting on your blankets or cushion and your lower back feeling supported.

Allow your knees to bend for the weight of the legs to sink in to the pelvis.

Exhale deep, allowing your pelvis to become heavier and heavier with each exhalation. Keep your focus at the crest of the throat while resting in this pose for as long as you’d like.

If you are under time pressure, make sure to give yourself at least 4-5 minutes in Viparita Karani, gently working your way up to 10 or even 15 minutes the coming months when you have the time.

Try elongating the legs and then allowing the knees to bend again, allowing them to sink all the way down to your chest even if you’d like – giving yourself a chance to feel what feels best for you in that moment, long or relaxed legs, as every moment is different and so are you in that moment.

The only constant is change, remember J?

I would recommend doing this pose every day when you feel you need some space for yourself. It is also a great pose to do before retiring to bed in the evenings as well as when you get back home from a busy day or morning.

It can easily be practiced in a hotel room or even a conference room when you are out travelling, or if you have the luxury of your own office why not use a corner there?

To come out of the pose, bend the knees and roll to your right side. Allow all the weight of the body to sink to the right before pushing yourself up gently to a sit.

Observe how you feel and where you want to go from there. This is your moment of reset.

Food and Mood seminar

Food & Mood

Sunday we held our 3rd seminar / Health Food Brunch in the Yummy, Fun And Healthy Living seminar series at MICA´s Coffee bar in Haarlem –  us being Stephanie from Appetit Voyage and me.

We would like to thank all of you who attended as well as Annemarie and Sophie for another morning of amazing food, drinks and atmosphere at their beautiful coffee bar.

The main idea behind these Health Food Brunches and Seminars is that people get together , bringing any questions they could possibly have when it comes to food, nutrition and health and we are there to answer them all.

We start the morning off with a theme to get the conversations and questions going, while staying open to being flexible to what the need is of the participants.

This time the kick off topic was ”Food & Mood”.

Up until recently most research in the field of ”Food & Mood” has been focused on the brain – the hormones and chemicals there which are supporting or even creating the way we feel in relation to the brain.

The past years, and as we speak, more and more scientific reports together with books are being published about our gut and the microbiotia in our entire metabolic channel proving to be the source of how well, or how not well, close to all procedures in our bodies are being executed. Including how we feel or will feel.

To quote David Jonsson  – ” The gutbacteria reacts to what we eat, excretes signal substances, communicates with our gut cells and influences what genes are switched on and off. They can influence how full you feel, what you crave, the health of your bloodvessels, how your liver reacts to sugar, if you are stressed, depressed or calm.”

Most of us have heard of the neuro transmitter serotonin, but did you know that it is created by a certain regular bacteria in the gut?

We modern westerners have around 8 – 1200 strains of bacteria in our guts, indigenous peoples have 1600 + plus none of our ”modern” dis-eases.

Without going in to too much detail in this shorter blog post – the sum of it all is that if you keep the good bacteria happy and well fed in your gut next to the bad bacteria low and starved, you have a beautiful, strong base for a well functioning body and mind.

So, how could you achive that?

Add more of this to your lifestyle;

  • Soluble fibers (veggies, berries, fruit, oats)
  • Resistant starch (legumes, root vegetables, potatoe starch)
  • Fermented foods (sauerkraut, kim chi, miso, soya etc)
  • Probiotica supplements

Have less  of, or rather completely remove,  this from your lifestyle;

  • Refined sugars
  • Meat from not wild four leggeds

These are the basics, which are really easy to incorporate. In addition, if you do not incorporate these, whatever you do after that will only work to a certain point and never 100 % as your base is not solid.

After this foundation has been built you can pimp your health even more by going for specific boosters for brain health –  as well as general health –  by adding the following to your lifestyle;

  • Fatty fish & seafood (or an Omega 3 supplement –  also available from algea for anyone vegan or preferring to support more enviromentally friendly products)
  • Ginger
  • Turmeric / Curcuma
  • Sweet potatoes
  • Onion
  • Pineapple
  • Blueberries and bananas , together
  • Cardamon (volatile oils, makes the gut relax)
  • Mint (volatile oils, makes the gut relax)
  • Potatoe starch
  • Psylliumseed
  • Movement & exercise – vital to both gut and brain health!
  • Good old H20
  • Honey – the more raw the better (essentially the microbiota of the bees)
  • Saffron – direct food for the serotonin production
  • Dark chocolate

Furthermore one important addition is …….Music!!!

Recent research has shown that when you play music which relaxes you ( your own choice of relaxing music that is , we all have different taste and ways 😉 ), your gut relaxes and your good bacteria becomes not just good but also happy bacteria.

Wishing you lots of Shiny Happy Gut Bacteria out there 😉

Our next workshop/s and seminars will be up on the site soon!

Yoga - Not an escape room

Yoga – not an escape room

Yoga is not here to let us escape from life. It is here to show us how to decipher what we believe life is. To see what is.

So many times people share their stories of how they cannot cope with the stresses of every day life, with what is percieved as a pushy boss, an inconsiderate co worker, a demanding family member, the commute to work and more if they did not have yoga.

That is a beautiful thing to hear.

It means that somewhere the heart, the mind, the body, the soul is finding space. Is finding release. Is discovering relief. And that zone of expanse you experience on your yoga mat is a magnificent place to start.

Yoga is, however, not an escape room.

Don´t get me wrong – I also came to yoga with a broken body, a broken heart, a confused and somewhat broken mind. At least that is how I percieved it all back then in the year of 2000.

Like so many others I also arrived on the yoga mat – which was actually a sheep skin back then in the beginners course at Yoga Tirol – with a burnout and a depression from exhaustion. And that first lesson, especially that initial Savasana where I fell asleep and was gently woken by my teacher just before the next class started , 30 minutes after ours closed, showed me a glimpse of something so bright and so generous I never looked back.

Yet it had nothing to do with performing a few asanas, hiding from the world outside the door of the studio and then finding yours truly headbutting in to reality as hard as possible only to wish myself back on that mat again.

What my teachers showed, and are still showing, me was, and is, a way of living life in this world. It did or does not necessarily make it easier all the time, however it does polish those glasses you are looking through as well as the mirror you are looking in, more and more by the day.

I feel urged to write this blog post as I see more and more students getting on their mats in all the different places where I teach, which is a true blessing. The world is in turmoil and so is humanity as a whole. We are destroying the planet at the same speed as we are destroying ourselves. Yoga – the polishing of the faculties we see and interpret our world through – is more necessary than ever, and I am grateful for all the people turning to this incredible practice for clarity, peace, stability and strength.

We have all , I believe, at this point heard about the three natural responses to a threat, to fear – fight, flight or freeze.
If not, you just read them ;-).

Fight – depending on the nature of the threat, there are different ways to fight it.
Flight – running away from the threat is quite often the wisest thing to do in a situation of the threat being a physical confrontation involving violence for instance.
Freeze – ”play dead”, ”wait till the storm blows over”, e.g.

Unless you live in a warzone, you are incarcerated or you are the equivalent of a Jason Bourne or an Ethan Hawke – most of your waking hours are not filled with physical threats. Yet, many of us have managed to create this scenario in our minds through all the things we as a society and individuals for some reason feel we need to do, have to perform, must accomplish, ought to aquire and so on.

When our bodies and minds say ”no” after to long a duress, there is a collapse.

For many of us this is what it takes for us to snap out of our destructive behaviour. We are told – rightly so a majority of the time – that our bodies stress response (threat response if you´d like) has been running to the max on the ”flight” reaction and now the body is exhausted.

One of the tools at this point being adviced is heading to the yoga mat.
Great ;-)!

But why? And how ?

Because, for instance, the pranayama practices allows your symphatic nervous system to slow down.
The asana practice guides you back in to your body so that you can feel it fully, read its signals, understand and cherish this vehicle which carries you around on this earth day after day.
The sitting meditation practice teaches you to look through the layers of all labels, behaviours, convictions, ideas both you and others have put upon yourself through the years.
The savasana or yoga nidra practice lets all your newly re-found knowledge and perspective settle in through all your layers.
The studying of the ancient texts brings a new pair of glasses accompanied by a new mirror to look through and in to.

With these tools you step off the mat and back in to the world.

The reason I feel so urged since quite some time to write this blog post is because even after this ”heading to the yoga mat” so many seem to still be fleeing. Which in itself is also largely due to yoga  being marketed in way right now as The big solution to many of the issues a lot of us are experiencing, be it physical or mental.

Nevertheless , we are not supposed to flee the world on to a mat for an hour and a half only to walk out the door fighting life and then wishing ourselves back to the next hour and a half on the mat a few days later.

That is not Yoga.

That is ”flight” all over again.

– First we fight, then we flee, and from flight we are straight back in to fight once again. Not Yoga.

I love that there are so many more yoga studios, yoga schools, yoga bookstores opening up everywhere. I love that we are getting more and more sanghas, more communities of searchers out there. I love the messages being spread.

Yet, are we being honest with ourselves? Are we practicing Satya? Are we practicing Ahimsa?

Are we living those messages we all quote on social media or are we using them to fight something we do not like?

Are we using these very messages to flee towards something we would rather have than to stay in and see what is here right now for what it actually is?

Are we just frozen trying to touch our toes asking ourselves why or how the heck that would signify ”I Am Love”?

Yoga & Healthy Lifestyle Week in the Winter Wonderland of Sweden

7 days all inclusive
March 16-22 2017

Would you like to keep living a sweet life in the absence of all things deemed as “unhealthy” – but you don’t even know where to start? Revsunds Prästgård B&B – together with certified nutritionist, yoga teacher and Health Coach Cecilia Götherström and food blogger & connoisseur Stephanie Mazier – has put together a full week´s unique course right in the middle of the breath taking Swedish nature. A full week where you will receive all the tools for a healthy lifestyle plus learn how to meet every day stresses & challenges while staying strong and glowing from the inside out. Including daily yoga and meditation sessions.

You lodge at the previous priests quarters built in 1906 in the Swedish county of Jämtland. The turn of the century manor at the shore of Lake Revsund breathes a serene atmosphere. Outside the world is tucked in under a soft, thick blanket of snow. Indoors the logs are crackling in the fireplace. There are no distractions. Only nature to inspire you, the silence to provide you with the perfect space to listen to what your own body needs and is telling you.

Every day we spend time in nature, we practice yoga & meditation and we cook together according to the theme of the day (see details in the program below).

Nutritionist Cecilia Götherström and food connoisseur Stephanie Mazier explain the background of the recipes based on the most recent scientific and published research. We go through all meals and occasions possible – from breakfast to fingerfoods and all in between. By the end of the week you will have gathered loads of practical experience and all the recipes to take home with you.

Enjoy a week full of peace and quiet and good food. We promise you lots of inspiration for a balanced lifestyle easy to maintain once you’re back in your busy life at home.

28/10 – Breakfast Seminar ; Holistic Health

In this breakfast seminar we will talk about Holistic Health with nutrition as a starting point, or a point of reference.

What does Holistic actually mean? Where does it come from? What does it entail? And how can I, with a few easy steps, live more holistically in this busy day and age without adding more stress to my plate?

You are welcome to bring as many questions as you may have, or bring up as many as arise during the seminar – we will gladly answer all of them as well as provide you with recipe suggestions and/or ways to tweak your already favourite foods if needed next to easy lifestyle changes.

We are totally stoked to be giving these Seminar and  Q & A mornings at MICA Coffebar in Haarlem, a beautiful setting where you can truly be yourself and enjoy amazingly yummy and pure food and drink products.

Welcome!

30/10 Yoga Workshop – Your Body As Your Teacher

Sunday 30/10

13.00 – 16.00

EVA`Z Yoga & Pilates, Heemstede

Aches, pains, loss of energy, hyper activity, not enough sleep, too much sleep and more – it is our body letting us know that something is out of skew.

Most of us know that already ;-).

How do we practice and re-learn how to listen to what comes after that signal – our body telling us what the need is?

Your body is your teacher. Always. And as all of us know – some teachers are gentle, guiding and nudging while others are bossy and pushy. Your body is all of that as a teacher, so that we don´t have to go to that place of uncomfort again. And most importantly, so that we can open up to that comfort that is actually possible anywhere, anytime.

Welcome to join me in this workshop , for all levels of yogi´s, where we dive in to the theme ”Your Body As Your Teacher”.

See you at  EVA´Z on the 30th of November!

Investment: EUR 35 :-
